Welcome to K9 Forensic Assessments
K9 Forensic Assessments is a partnership comprising of Steve Bishop, Peter Madden and Paul Nicholls. They collectively have over a century of experience in the fields of both law enforcement and dangerous dogs.
All three are former Dog Legislation Officers (DLO's) who were permitted by the crown to give expert evidence of breeds banned by the secretary of state under Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. They are also able to conduct behavioural assessments and reports for dogs requiring assessment under relevant legislation.
********************************************BREAKING NEWS 01st OCTOBER 2026********************************************
As of 01st October 2026, the UK Government have introduced a scheme for owners to deregister their dogs if they believe their dog is not an XL Bully. It's up to the owner to determine if their dog is not an XL Bully and owners must apply on the Gov.uk website to withdraw a certificate of exemption. Once a certificate of exemption is withdrawn, it cannot be reinstated and you cannot apply for a replacement. If you withdraw a certificate of exemption and it subsequently found to be an XL Bully, you will be committing a criminal offence, your dog may be seized and you will have to go through the courts to keep the dog.
If you believe your dog does not substantially conform to the DEFRA XL Bully conformation standard and you require help, phone or email us and see where we can assist you.

Behavioural assessments
Cases involving dogs going through the complex justice process often require the opinion of an expert in canine behaviour. There are many reasons why an individual dog has acted in a particular way. Here at K9 Forensic Assessments, we utilise decades of experience combined with scientific and academic qualifications to provide the courts with comprehensive behavioural reports for all dogs facing prosecution under Section 3 Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and Section 2 Dogs Act 1871.
All of our assessments are recorded and professional photographs taken.
Breed Identification
We are able to forensically examine dogs to establish whether or not they substantially conform to breed standards that would then contravene Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. Breeds or types of dog include:
XL Bully
Pitbull Type
Dogo Argentina
Fila Brasilia
Japanese Tosa
